About Slate & Tile Systems

Slate and tiling is both a traditional and popular method of providing a waterproof outer layer to pitched and vertical roofs. Any roof with a 15° or greater roof pitch is defined as a pitched or sloped. A typical roof pitch in the UK for a traditional style house will be 40°- 50° but can go up to 70° depending on the period of which it was built and what is considered to be aesthetically pleasing to the architect.

The roof is usually designed by the architect and there are several variations of roof designs but the two basic shapes that most roofs use in their designs are gable and hip, a complex roof design can incorporate both these elements. Regardless of the design a typical pitched roof is made up of 4 elements: Wooden joists which support the weight of the roof; A breathable membrane to reduce wind up-lift and offers secondary protection to any water ingress.

Timber battens – Western Counties roofing only use products certified to FSC & PEFC to ensure all timber used has come from and are actively working towards helping maintain sustainable forests.

WCR only use factory pre graded batten to ensure it is safe, strong and as long lasting as possible, all batten are clearly marked with the standard and dyed either Red, Blue or Gold.
The roof can then be completed with a number of materials available including natural slate, manmade slate, clay or concrete tile.

When selecting the roof covering a number of factors need consideration these include: planning restrictions, aesthetic requirements, site exposure, pitch of the roof and finally cost. Slates and tiles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures and colours. There are several different fixing methods to suit any design requirement, with a vast range of ridge, verge, valley, flashing and dryfix systems to cater for specific applications and different sets of conditions.
