After being officially unveiled at Plainmoor, Managing Director Dave White, Financial Director Lesley White, and Director Ben Robinson told us more about the company, and their decision to get behind The Gulls.
“Lesley and I are brother and sister, Ben is my nephew, and my father Derek started the business in the 1970s,” began Dave.
“Since our father passed away in 2001, myself and Lesley have taken it on and grown the business. Ben has been with us 20 years now and he’s the visionary of the business – me and Lesley just watch what happens really!”
“We thought it was a unique opportunity to get involved with the side. We started with a couple of boards and it’s grown from there,” added Ben.
“The Club have obviously been on the up, and it’s given us a great platform to be a part of. Hopefully, the success the team had last season continues this year, and it turns into promotion!”

WCR Group’s strong connection with football is not confined to just the English Riviera though, with the company name particularly prominent in youth development across the region. There’s also a family connection at Plainmoor too, with Ben’s son having recently joined the youth-team ranks at Torquay.
“Youth football is very important to us, and we sponsor a lot of youth football throughout the south-west. Bringing kids into football and giving them an outlet is really important, and we hope that some of the money that we’ve put into the Club goes into the youth set-up, which in turn might help the first-team in the future. The goal and the aim is to get the Club back to where it should be – in the Football League.”
Regarding the prospects for Paul Wotton’s side this term, WCR are understandably hoping their presence will help inspire United to scale new heights during the upcoming campaign.
“It looks really exciting. The new players that have come in have good pedigree and will hopefully take us to the next level. That’s what everyone wants. Paul obviously had a tough start when he arrived, having to build a squad of players, but last year was fantastic, and although disappointing in the end, we’re hoping the new players will strengthen the squad and give us that push we need.”
Everyone at Torquay United would like to place on record our thanks to WCR Group for their continued support, and we look forward to a successful new season together!
